Description
Charnock Richard Church of England School Number 1 and the railings in front were built in 1858 and include the attached master's house. The building features sandstone rubble with roofs covered in hexagonal slates, and has three ridge chimneys, two part-corbelled side wall chimneys, and one gable chimney at the rear. The T-shaped plan was slightly modified by a later addition of a hall at the rear. Designed in the Gothic style, the school is a rectangular, single-storey structure that is four bays long. Both gables have large arched three-light windows with reticulated tracery, and the east gable extends to form a bellcote. There are four rectangular windows on the side wall. At the west end, there is a square privy house that is steeply gabled and matches the main building. At right angles to the school is a range that includes a porch and the master's house, which has two bays that are stepped back and is two storeys high. The master's house features a centrally located steeply gabled porch that matches the school, with two rectangular windows on each floor. The ground floor windows have splayed reveals and stone mullions, with the left window having three lights and the others having two lights. The property also includes iron railings in front of the house, which are adorned with fleur-de-lys heads. The style of this building is similar to that of Christ Church.
