Description
Old Shaw Green Farmhouse is a farmhouse dated 1703 that has been altered in the 1930s and is now used as a house. It is constructed of handmade brick set on a high chamfered plinth of red sandstone rubble, with quoins and a stone slate roof featuring gable copings and kneelers. The building has a 4-flue chimney stack on the ridge and another chimney on the right side wall that is partially corbelled. Originally, it had an L-shaped plan with three bays, a forward crosswing, and a gabled stair turret on the right, although the re-entrant is now filled by a modern outshut.
The farmhouse is two and a half storeys tall, with a first-floor band on the front and left gable. The ground floor features casement windows with segmental brick heads, and the modern outshut to the left is designed in a compatible style and materials, except for the stone doorcase. This outshut incorporates a datestone above the door, lettered in relief as S T D 1703. There is also a similar modern single-storey extension at the left end. The right side wall has one window on each floor.
At the rear, the wing projects slightly and has two windows on each floor, along with one in the attic. The first and second bays each have three tall windows on every floor, with one ground floor opening altered to serve as a door. At the junction of the bays, there are two small fire or cupboard windows on each floor, and all ground floor openings and fire windows have segmental brick heads. The roof features two modern hipped-roof dormers.
Inside, there are back-to-back inglenook fireplaces with bressummers, although the one in the kitchen is now concealed. The second bay has chamfered beams, while others are ovolo-moulded. A dog-leg staircase rises to full height and features a string, column newels, turned balusters, and a moulded handrail. Some box-framed partition walls include clamstaff-and-daub infill.
