Description

Christ Church is a church built in 1839 by E. Welch, which has since been converted into a restaurant. The building is constructed of ashlar stone and features a slate roof. It has a west tower and a nave with a short chancel, all under a single roof, designed in a minimal Romanesque style. The two-stage tower, which does not have a spire, has angled pilaster buttresses on the first stage. This stage includes a round-headed west door with splayed jambs. The second stage, which is slightly recessed above a chamfered dripmould, has two recessed rectangular lancets on each of its three sides, topped by a short octagonal drum. The nave consists of six bays with pilaster buttresses and round-headed lancets that contain replacement windows. The east window features five stepped lancet lights, and there is a priest door on the south side of the chancel. Although the interior has been altered, the panelled galleries remain. This church is noted as a Commissioners' Church.
