Description
The arched gateway and garden wall attached to the south front of Shuttleworth Hall is a Grade II* listed structure from the 17th century. It is built from coursed sandstone blocks and features a dressed pitched two-course coping with a moulded ridge. The wall stands approximately 1.5 metres high and forms three sides of a rectangular enclosure that measures about 25 metres long and 15 metres wide.
On the south side, aligned with the porch of the house, there is a moulded segmental-headed gateway topped with a crow-stepped parapet, which is missing its ball finial. The gateway has wooden doors adorned with ornamental iron hinges. The coping on the east side of the wall includes a small octagonal pedestal with a carved panel on the outer face, which is lettered in relief with "CH" and incised on the reverse with "EA." This pedestal is believed to have been for a sundial, although it is positioned too high to be read from ground level. The coping on the west side of the wall is missing the upper course.
