Description

No. 151 on Elliot Street is a bank building, now used as office premises, constructed around 1900. It was likely designed by F W Morton for the Union Bank of Manchester. The building is made of ashlar sandstone and features a glazed roof. It is a single-storey structure located on a corner site, with a three-bay front facing Elliot Street and a two-bay left return that faces Patchett Street, which includes a lower four-window wing.

The design is classical and in the Doric style. The building has a plinth with pedestals connected by a continuous cornice, supporting engaged columns. The central doorway features a ten-panel door set within an eaved architrave, topped by a frieze that displays the word 'BANK' in raised letters. Above this is a dentilled cornice, beneath finely-carved arms of the Union Bank of Manchester. The flanking bays have later windows set in rusticated surrounds with raised keystones. The entablature includes triglyphs and mutules, and there is a balustraded parapet with four dies.

On the left return, there is channel-rustication, and the building has contemporary rain-water goods with patterned and corniced hoppers, along with an entablature and balustrade that match the front. The left wing features channel-rustication and two-pane sashes arranged in a 3:1:1:3 light configuration, with Art Nouveau leaded lower sashes and a modillioned cornice.

Inside, the building has been remodelled with a false ceiling that conceals remnants of classical plasterwork, while an intact Art Nouveau stained-glass ceiling remains visible.
