Description
The Elliot Street drinking fountain is a stone fountain built around 1892, funded by Tyldesley historian John Buckley, who left £200 in his will for "a water drinking fountain for Man, Beasts and Dogs." Initially called the Buckley Fountain, it was unveiled in 1893 in front of a crowd. The fountain was originally topped with a gas light, intended to also serve as a "public lamp pillar." Historic maps indicate it was first located in The Square, south of Elliot Street, on the east side of Chapel Street. It was later moved to Astley Street Park, then back to The Square on the north side of Elliot Street, and finally cleaned and reinstated in front of Tyldesley Top Chapel in 2015, almost in its original position.
Designed in a Gothic Revival style, the drinking fountain features a stone square shaft mounted on stone steps, with cusped niches on each face surrounding the drinking fountains. One niche bears the inscription: "Donated by John Buckley 1812-1892." The fountain includes corner colonnettes that support gablets displaying coats of arms, and a square tapering shaft that replaces a roof.
