TYLDESLEY ELLIOTT STREET (south side) Drinking fountain
[Formerly listed as Drinking fountain, ELLIOTT STREET (north side)]
GV II
The Elliot Street drinking fountain is a stone fountain erected in around 1892. The fountain was funded by Tyldesley historian John Buckley (1812-1892) who left £200 in his will for ‘a water drinking fountain for Man, Beasts and Dogs’. Initially known as the Buckley Fountain, it was unveiled in front of a crowd in 1893.The fountain was originally topped with a gas light as it was intended to also serve as a "public lamp pillar". Historic mapping shows that it was originally located in The Square, south of Elliot Street, on the east side of Chapel Street. It was later moved to Astley Street Park, then back to The Square on the north side of Elliot Street, before being cleaned and reinstated, almost in its original position, in front of Tyldesley Top Chapel in 2015.
The drinking fountain is of stone and designed in a Gothic Revival style. It has a stone square shaft mounted on stone steps with cusped niches in each face. The niches surround the drinking fountains and one bears the inscription: ‘Donated by John Buckley 1812-1892’. There are corner colonnettes supporting gablets which bear coats of arms and a square tapering shaft which takes the place of a roof.
