Description
This is a lodge and gate to Ince Cemetery, constructed between 1855 and 1857 by A. Waterhouse. The lodge is built of rock-faced stone with ashlar dressings and has a slate roof featuring panels of hexagonal slates. It is a two-storey, L-shaped building with a re-entrant lean-to porch. The south facade has a projecting window with a hipped stone roof, featuring three cusped ogee-headed lights. To the right of the porch is a blocked light and a segmental-pointed entrance with an overlight leading to a board door. The right return has two cusped lights with a central shaft. The first floor features a two-light, single-chamfered-mullioned window in the first bay, and a clock with a square frame positioned above. The right return includes small lateral buttresses and a relieving arch over three stepped cusped ogee-headed lights. A single-chamfered-mullioned window with a trefoil opening above is also present on the first floor. The left return is similar, with a gabled dormer, a lateral stack, and a comparable appearance to the rear, which also incorporates a lateral stack. Adjacent paired gates lead into the cemetery, with a single gate to the right. The two gate piers have weathered buttresses and gables on all four sides, adorned with foliated corbels and sunk trefoils. They support elaborate cast iron gates.
