Description
The gatehouse to Wigan Hall, built in 1875 by G.E. Street, features an attached boundary wall. It is constructed from coursed sandstone rubble at the ground floor, with plastered half-timbering above. The building has a steeply-pitched hipped tiled roof adorned with cockscomb ridge tiles and brick chimneys. The layout is L-shaped, with the main range running parallel to the street and a rear wing to the left, designed in a 13th-century style.
The gatehouse has two storeys and four bays, displaying an asymmetric arrangement. The third bay contains a full-height open archway with a four-centred wooden arch. To the left, the second bay features a two-centred arched doorway with a run-out hood-mould and a two-light casement window at the first floor, offset to the left. The first bay has mullioned three-light windows on both floors and an outshut to the left, while the fourth bay includes a pair of one-light windows at the ground floor. The shallow upper floor showcases ornamental cusped bracing. A tall corniced chimney stack with vertical ribbing is located at the junction of the third and fourth bays, with a similar chimney on the rear wing. The rear of the building includes a gabled two-light dormer over the third bay and a tile-hung gable on the wing. The interior has not been inspected.
