Description

This is a barn, likely dating from the later 17th century, that was converted into cottages and shops at an early date, and is now used as four shops. It was probably converted again in the early 19th century. The barn is constructed of handmade brown brick on a rendered plinth, with a rendered façade featuring scored stucco, and has a slate roof. It has a long, irregular, single-depth plan.

The building is two storeys high with 1 to 2 windows per bay, creating a total of 7 window bays. Number 4, at the left end, has a shop front in a Victorian style, inserted in the 20th century. Numbers 6 and 8 feature a large, plain shop front with a doorway to the left, a plain fascia, and a prominent cornice, along with a doorway to the right featuring a moulded architrave. Number 10 has a double-fronted shop front. Numbers 12 and 14 have a plain doorway to the left and a small shop window to the right, with a lettered fascia. Various windows, some sash windows, are present on the first floor. At the rear, the east end has a canted design, with small slit breathers indicating the original barn structure and various inserted windows.

The interior of the building was not inspected. This building represents a notable survival of pre-industrial architecture within the historic centre of Wigan. It is situated as part of a group with numbers 5 to 9 opposite.
