Description
Erlesdene is a house, built in 1873, now converted into flats. Designed by Mills and Murgatroyd, it is constructed of rock-faced stone with ashlar dressings, and has a decorative slate roof. The building has an asymmetrical plan, with two storeys and an attic, and eight by five bays. It is designed in a Victorian Gothic/Elizabethan style.
The house features a projecting plinth, quoins, bands, projecting stone eaves, a steep roof, and dormer-gables to bays six and eight. Bays two and four have shaped gables. Bays one to three contain mullion windows with transoms and carved overpanels on the ground floor, while sash windows and an oriel window are on the first floor. The entrance porch, located in bay four, has arched keystone openings supported by Corinthian columns, weathered angle-buttresses, a cornice, a parapet, and finials. Above the porch is a two-light window and a shaped gable with a cusped light and finials.
A four-storey tower in bay five has a two-storey castellated oriel window supported by a column with an enriched capital and carved beast. Further details include a modillion eaves cornice, a pierced parapet, and an elaborate weather-vane. Bays six, seven, and eight feature various one, two, and three-light mullion windows, some with relieving arches. The east elevation includes three gables, some traceried lights with leaded glass, and a canted bay window.
