Description
The stables located to the south of Dunham Hall, likely built around 1721 with later extensions in the late 18th century, now house a restaurant and shop. The structure features a combination of Flemish bond and English garden wall bond brickwork, stone dressings, and a graduated stone slate roof. It is a long, U-shaped range of stables, symmetrically designed around a central entrance, which was later expanded to the west, resulting in an M-shaped roof. The building consists of nine bays with two-bay wings at each end and is two storeys high throughout.
It has a stone plinth, a first-floor band, small eaves, and hipped roofs. Each bay includes a cross window with stone mullions, transoms, and surrounds, featuring leaded lights on the ground floor, except for bays four and ten, which have door openings with triple keystones and stone surrounds. The central bay is distinguished by pilasters, an entablature, a pediment, and a segmental-headed door with a stone surround and triple keystone. The first floor has an oeil-de-boef with stone surrounds and leaded lights in each bay, and there are small eaves pediments over bays four and ten. The west elevation has seven bays with a stone plinth and similar windows on both floors. The central feature of this elevation is pedimented and projects forward, featuring semi-circular stone-dressed door openings with fanlights and triple keystones, along with detached stone mounting steps at each end.
Inside, much of the original range retains its oak stalls, some separated by large Ionic columns turned in oak. The roof features pegged oak king-post trusses, with some having curved diagonal members.
