Description

Trinity House is a Methodist chapel, now used as auction rooms, built in 1875 by Pennington and Bridgen of Manchester. The building is constructed of brick and ashlar with a slate roof and features a classic chapel plan with a three-sided gallery. The entrance front is two stories high and has five bays, highlighted by a full-height distyle Ionic portico in antis, giving it a grand appearance. The façade includes a rusticated stone plinth, giant corner pilasters, a dentilled cornice, and an entablature inscribed with "TRINITY CHAPEL." It also features a three-bay dentilled pediment with a cross in the tympanum. The outer bay windows on the ground floor have enriched entablatures with antefixae, while a semi-circular headed window on the first floor is framed by an architrave and an enriched panel. The side elevations are designed in a related style with seven bays.

Inside, staircases flank the portico and lead to the gallery, which has a panelled pitch pine parapet with an enriched plaster band and is supported by cast iron columns with elaborate capitals. The central wooden pulpit is positioned in front of the former organ arch, which is now blocked, and features a panelled soffit with giant half columns and pilasters. The ceiling is coved and includes an enriched panelled cupola that supports a large wrought iron light fitting. The interior also contains stained glass. The design of the chapel was selected through a competition.
