Description

The Victoria Street War Memorial in Newton is a sandstone structure approximately 3.6 meters tall, located at the junction of Victoria Street and Cartwright Street. It is set on a square block of coursed stone within a small garden, which is enclosed by iron railings. The memorial features a three-stage base that is square in shape, supporting a tall plinth topped with a pediment. On the west-facing side of the pediment, there is a carved relief of a be-ribboned wreath, with the year 1914 inscribed on the left side of the ribbon and 1919 on the right. Above the plinth stands a bronze statue of a soldier in full equipment, carrying a rifle. This statue is a replacement for the original life-sized version made of Portland stone.

The west face of the pedestal has an inscription that reads: "ERECTED BY THE RESIDENTS OF VICTORIA STREET AND DISTRICT, IN HONOUR OF THE MEN WHO ANSWERED THEIR COUNTRY’S CALL KILLED IN ACTION," followed by the names of thirty individuals. The upper stage of the base lists eight additional names. The middle stage riser includes the inscription: "UNVEILED AND DEDICATED BY ALDERMAN TURNER MARCH 13TH 1920," while the lower stage riser notes the builder’s name: "WILLOUGHBY, WILDE & SONS/ HYDE."

On the south face of the pedestal, there are seventy-one names inscribed, along with the word "LIBERTY" on the base below. The east face features sixty-nine names, with the words "(NAME) FRATERNITY (NAME)" on the base. The north face has sixty-four names, and the base carries the inscription "PATRIOTISM." The middle stage riser also includes the name and regiment of a soldier, stating "KILLED IN AFGHANISTAN MAY 2ND 2010."
