Description
Nos. 16a and 18 Middle Hillgate are a pair of two-storey houses dating from the 18th century. The houses are constructed of brick with a Welsh slate roof and a decorative wood eaves cornice. A broad brick band separates the ground and first floors. The ground floor is rendered, while the upper floor is brick. There are six windows, each without glazing bars, and each set within a gauged brick arch. The ground floor windows comprise one window of three lights and one single window. A modern door is set beneath a rectangular fanlight. A rainwater head dated 1715 is incorporated into an elaborate drainpipe featuring a vine scroll, a cherub's head, and the initials "B" above the number "1". A gable pediment with a window is incorporated into the roof. Nos. 14 to 18 (even) and 16A form a group, with No. 14 being of local interest.
