Description

The building at 27 Higher Hillgate is a three-storey brick house, said to have been built in 1742. It was acquired in 1783 by Samuel Oldknow, known as the "muslin king," and in 1802 passed to William Radcliffe of Mellor, the inventor of the dressing frame. The house was attacked by Luddites in 1812.

The front facade features three windows, currently with a six-light mullion and transom design, set within gauged brick arches. A prominent doorcase is present, featuring Greek Ionic half-columns and an open pediment, with Adam ornament to impost blocks. Above the doorway is a radiating fanlight, and the door itself has six panels. Five steps lead to the main entrance. A rear wing includes a plain pilastered doorway and a modillion eaves cornice. The building forms a visual grouping with the adjacent property at number 23.
