Description
The Ellesmere Memorial, located on Worsley Leigh Road, is a memorial monument built in 1859 by Driver and Weber of London. It was created following a competition judged by Charles Barry to honor Francis Egerton, the 1st Earl of Ellesmere. The structure is made of ashlar and features a band of Minton encaustic tiles, along with corner columns made from a unique serpentine stone discovered at the Lizard.
The memorial consists of two main stages topped by a spire, which was originally situated on a tall octagonal column that stood 132 feet high but has since been removed. The lower stage includes gabled angle buttresses with offsets, pointed arched aedicules set on squat colonettes that frame the arms and an inscription. Above this, there is a steep crocketed gable over a dwarf biforium, which features a cusped arcade and crocketed gablets. The heraldic finials at the corners were removed around 1980.
The upper stage is octagonal and has crocketed gables with pierced tympana supported by colonnettes, framing pointed arches. The diagonal sides of the upper stage feature blind cusped pointed arches. The octagonal spire has an open lantern stage, with each pointed opening topped by a gable. Surrounding the memorial are iron railings adorned with ornamental finials.
