Description
Worsley Court House, built in 1849 for the 1st Earl of Ellesmere, is a timber-framed structure now serving as a public function suite. It features a slate roof and a picturesque design that centers around a large hall, flanked by lower wings, all of which are single-storey. The building has a projecting stone plinth and vertically studded framing, with decorative square panelling in the numerous gables. The tall gable of the hall is accompanied by smaller gabled wings that project forward. Between these wings is a loggia with a balustrade, creating a porchway that leads to an off-centre studded door with a Tudor-arched moulded surround. The windows typically have 3 to 6 lights, with ovolo-moulded timber mullions, leaded casements, and some featuring transoms. The gables are adorned with decorative barge boards and finials. On the left side, there is a projecting wing with a large stone chimney stack, while the right side of the hall boasts a massive projecting stone chimney stack topped with a pyramidal roof, resembling a tower in an Italianate style. Adjacent to this is the principal window, a 6-light gabled oriel with mullions and transoms. The library at the rear is not included in this listing. The revival of timber-framing in 1849 is an early example and one of only a few in the Worsley area.
