Description
The Control Tower at Barton Aerodrome is an air traffic control tower built around 1937. It is constructed of brick with reinforced concrete roofs. The structure features a three-stage octagonal tower that rises from a single-storey podium, which has small radiating wings at each of its four corners. The podium is topped with a coped parapet above a soldier course and includes various doors and windows with glazing bars. The tower's upper stage is glazed and has a concrete balcony with steel railings. Access to the tower is provided by an external reinforced concrete dogleg stair. Barton Aerodrome was the first municipal airport in the world when it opened in 1930, and the control tower was reported in the press in 1937 as "the first air traffic control station."
