Description

The Alkrington and Providence War Memorial is a war memorial built in 1929, designed in the Moderne style. It has a rectangular shape and stands on an octagonal plinth and a circular base.

Constructed from red sandstone, the memorial features a pair of plain rectangular sandstone columns that are joined at both the base and the top. These columns support a staged architrave with foliate brackets, which holds the shaft of a stylised Latin cross. The cross's shaft is recessed and displays the date AD1929 on both sides. The columns rise from a rectangular pedestal that is elevated on a narrow projecting base.

The pedestal includes two raised panels framed with foliate designs. The front panel, facing north, contains the inscription: "+ / THAT THEY MAY BE / + / MADE PERFECTLY ONE / John 17:23 / THIS MEMORIAL IS ERECTED TO RECORD / THE UNION OF / SALEM AND ALKRINGTON / CONGREGATIONAL CHURCHES / JUNE 1929 / AND TO KEEP / IN REMEMBRANCE THE / MEN OF SALEM / WHO DIED IN THE / GREAT WAR 1914 – 1919 / THE SOULS OF THE RIGHTEOUS / ARE IN THE HAND OF GOD / WISDOM 3:1." The rear panel lists the 11 names of those who fell in the First World War.

Additionally, there is a secondary canted sandstone tablet on a stylised scroll base that extends from the base of the cross over the upper step and onto the first step of the octagonal plinth. This tablet reads: "IN MEMORY OF THE MEN OF / ALKRINGTON CONG. CHURCH / WHO LOST THEIR LIVES / IN WORLD WAR 1939 -1945" and includes the names of eight individuals who died in the Second World War. The plinth is set upon a circular base made of stone sets, surrounded by an arc of edging stones.
