Description
Nos. 394, 396, 398, and 400 on Shawclough Road are four houses built around 1810. They are constructed from watershot stone and have stone slate roofs. Each house is three storeys high, double-depth, and one bay wide, with the entrance door positioned to the right and a chimney stack to the left. Each house features a square-cut monolithic door surround, a square-shaped window opening on the ground floor, and a six-light window on the first floor, except for No. 394, which has a square opening. Nos. 398 and 400 have had two mullions removed and two lights blocked, and each house has a three-light opening in the attic floor, with the sill of this window abutting the base of the first-floor window. All mullions are flat-faced, and all windows have 20th-century casements. Nos. 394 and 396 are raised above the basement and are accessed by steps. The eaves are supported by moulded stone brackets.
