Description

This is a house, now divided into three cottages, dating from 1678. It is located on the north side of Harridge Street, Rochdale. The building is constructed of coursed rubble with ashlar dressings and a stone slate roof. It has a three-unit plan, with projecting crosswings on either side of the central house part. The main entrance is to the left of the house part (number 8), though there are further entrances to the left of number 6 and a later entrance to number 10. The crosswings do not project at the rear, but there is a central outshut, likely of a later date. A projecting plinth and stone quoins are visible, and a chamfered porch with a carved lintel projects as far as the crosswings. The left-hand entrance has chamfered jambs and a flattened triangular head with a heavy lintel. The left wing has largely replaced windows, whereas the house part retains a 5-light double-chamfered mullion window with a hoodmould; the right wing originally had a similar window but now only has 4 lights due to the insertion of a door. The first floor above the house part has a 4-light double-chamfered mullioned window, with one mullion removed, and the first floor of the right crosswing has a 3-light chamfered mullion window. The rear elevation features a variety of 1, 2, and 3-light windows.
