Description
Shore Hall is a house dating from 1605, as indicated by the inscription "IB 1605" on the door lintel. It is built from hammer-dressed stone and features a graduated stone slate roof. The house has a T-shaped hearth-passage plan, consisting of five bays and two storeys. It showcases quoins and a projecting plinth. The door in the second bay has a heavily chamfered surround with carved stops and a Tudor-arched lintel.
The house-part includes a 3-light fire window and a 5-light mullion and transom window, both of which were enlarged in the 20th century. The first bay has a 3-light mullion window, while the fifth bay has a 5-light mullion window. The first floor features 3, 2, 2, 2, and 4-light mullion windows, all of which are double-chamfered and have hoodmoulds, with some mullions being cavetto-moulded. The eaves are supported by shaped gutter brackets. The left gable is coped with a ball finial, and the originally gabled cross wing is now hipped.
There are three diagonally set chimney stacks with cornices, with the one on the right return projecting. The right return has 2 and 3-light windows, while the left return has 4-light windows, one of which is a 20th-century copy. The rear features a similar heavily chamfered door surround and a 2-light double-chamfered cavetto-moulded mullion window. The rear of the cross wing has 3 and 4-light flat-faced mullion windows from the 18th century and a lean-to extension against its gable.
Inside, there is an imposing stone fireplace in the house-part with an elliptical head, a cyma-moulded surround, and an ogee-moulded cornice, which may have replaced a former smoke hood. The interior also features hewn beams, some of which are chamfered and one is forked. Shore Hall is a fine and well-preserved example of an early 17th-century yeoman's house, as noted in H. Fishwick's "History of Rochdale" from 1889.
