Description

The Lawton chest tomb, dating from the 18th century, is located to the east of the Church of St. Chad in Uppermill. This chest tomb is made of stone and features an inscribed slab that is supported by blind balustrading with turned half-balusters and panelled corner dies. The slab is adorned with a carved decorative panel at the top and bears the inscription: "Here Alice Daughter of Joseph Lawton of Dobcross Gentleman was buried the 7th Day of July Anno Dom 1764." It also commemorates Mary, the wife of Joseph, who died in 1772, and Joseph Lawton himself, who passed away in 1788.
