Description
The former Electricity Power Station, built in 1901 and now serving as part electricity sub-station and part central-heating generator for the area, is located on Winser Street in Manchester. This building features a trapeziform plan on an island site next to the Rochdale Canal and the former canal basin at the rear. It is constructed of red brick with sandstone dressings, and while the roof is not visible, the structure showcases an Industrial Baroque style.
The facade facing Bloom Street is characterized by five bays and includes a regular arcade with stone-banded piers and giant round-headed arches featuring keystones. The openings are adorned with large stone mullions and transoms, with the first, third, and fifth openings fitted with louvred screens, while the others are blind or blocked. The upper levels are pilastered, complete with cornices and a parapet. The Winser Street facade is similar but less regular, featuring a three-window office in the center. A large octagonal chimney is also a prominent feature of the building.
This structure is an unusual and early example of a local electricity station and plays an important role in the functional character of the surrounding warehousing area. It is part of a group with nearby buildings at No.102 and No.104 Bloom Street, No.2 and No.12 Harter Street, and Nos 54 and 56 Princess Street.
