Description
The former Church of St James, now a nursing home, was built between 1845 and 1846 by J.M. Derick. It is constructed of coursed squared sandstone and features slate roofs, designed in the 13th-century Gothic style. The building includes a nave with a south-west steeple, north and south aisles, and a chancel with a north vestry and south chapel aligned on parallel axes.
The four-stage tower has a weathered plinth and clasping buttresses on the first two stages. It features a set-back belfry stage with clasping corner pilasters and corbel tables, topped by a broach spire with lucarnes. The south doorway is arched with a double-chamfered surround and hoodmould, while the second stage has small cusped lancets and the belfry windows are louvred 2-light with geometrical plate tracery.
The six-bay nave has a two-centred arched west doorway with a double-chamfered surround and hoodmould, alongside a tall two-centred arched west window with two lancet lights and a quatrefoil at the top, also featuring a hoodmould. The nave is capped by a steeply pitched coped gable with an apex cross and has a pilastered clerestory with an arcaded window of five cusped lights and a corbel table for each bay. The aisles have low buttressed walls with two small lancets and a corbel table for each bay, although the fifth bay has been altered to serve as a doorway. The chancel, chapel, and vestry are designed in a similar style. The interior has not been inspected.
