Description
A restaurant, shops, and warehousing complex was built in 1877, designed by Clegg and Knowles. Constructed on a corner site, the building is an eclectic style incorporating elements of the Aesthetic Movement. It is primarily sandstone ashlar with stucco, likely supported by an iron frame, and has a slate roof. The building is rectangular in plan, with four unequal bays containing 3, 4, 2 and 2 windows respectively, alongside a canted corner.
Architectural features include plain pilasters, raked sills on all floors, coved pargetted eaves richly decorated with leaves and fruit, and a parapet interrupted by a wide, half-hipped attic above the second bay. A prominent octagonal wooden corner turret has a steeply-pitched roof. The ground floor houses shops with altered windows within original stone surrounds, and a segmental-headed doorway is located in the second bay. Upper floors feature running arcaded windows with shafts and foliated caps; these are stilted square-headed on the first floor, stilted segmental-headed on the second floor, and two-centred arched on the third floor. A large dormer window displays transomed 16-light glazing and the date "1877" in large lettering beneath projecting verges with spindlework. The right-hand parapet terminates with a seated rustic figure. Slab chimneys are present. A tiled entrance hall is located inside.
