Description

The Bus Depot and Transport Museum, located on Queens Road in Cheetham, Manchester, is a former electric tram shed that dates back to 1901 and has been altered over time. The building is constructed of red brick with some stone dressings and features steeply-pitched slate roofs. It consists of a two-storey office block at the front and a tram shed behind the facade.

The structure has 15 irregular bays and a wide splayed corner to the left. This corner is highlighted by a very large round-headed window with a chamfered surround and five stone voussoirs, including a carved keystone. Above the window is a keyed clock-face set within an arched surround, flanked by ramped screen walls. The main range of the building has a rhythmic arrangement of bays designated as AAABBACABBAAAA, with low buttresses positioned between these sections. The "A" bays feature semi-circular windows at the ground floor and tall half dormers with gables, while the central "C" bay is larger and has a banded gable. The "B" bays contain square-headed windows on both floors, with eaves that are swept out. All windows are fitted with metal glazing bars.

Nos. 99 and 99A, which are attached at the right-hand end, share a similar design but have wooden small-paned windows. The splayed corner includes a foundation stone that bears the inscription "City of Manchester. The first electric car shed, opened on the 6th day of June 1901," along with a war memorial plaque. The long return side of the building is designed in a simpler style. The interior has not been inspected.
