Description
A pair of houses dated circa 1840, located on Smedley Lane in Cheetham, Manchester. The houses are constructed of red brick in a Flemish bond pattern, with sandstone dressings and a slate roof. They follow a double-depth plan; number 9 has a single-fronted design, while number 11 is double-fronted. The houses are two storeys high with cellars, displaying 2 and 3 windows respectively. A first-floor sill band and a wooden eaves cornice with modillioned detail are present. Number 9 features a stone, pedimented doorcase and a canted bay window to the left, which was boarded at the time of survey. Number 11 has a doorway with a plain stone surround and traces of a former pediment above, alongside a four-pane sash window to the left and a canted bay window to the right. Both houses have four-pane sashed windows on the first floor, each with a flat arched head. The roof includes skylights on the front slope, a ridge chimney located at the junction of the houses, and a gable chimney to the right. The interior was not inspected. This building is listed for its group value.
