Description

A pair of houses dating from around 1840, located on Smedley Lane in Cheetham, Manchester. The houses are built of red brick in a Flemish bond pattern, with sandstone dressings and a slate roof. They are arranged with a double-depth plan, with No. 13 having a double-fronted facade and No. 15 a single-fronted facade. The buildings are two storeys high, with cellars, and have 3 windows at No. 13 and 2 windows at No. 15.

The houses have a plinth, a sill band on the first floor, and a wooden eaves cornice with modillioned detail. Each house has a doorway with a stone doorcase featuring pilasters, a dentilled cornice, and a pediment. The doors are panelled with a rectangular overlight above. Tall, stone canted bay windows are present to the left and right respectively, and each has pilasters, a dentilled cornice, a blocking course, and 4-pane sashed glazing. Other windows have flat-arched heads and 4-pane sashes. A ridge chimney is positioned at the junction of the two houses, and gable chimneys are located at each end. The interior has not been inspected. The pair of houses reflect a design similar to Nos. 9 and 11 to the left.
