Description

49 Piccadilly is a clothiers' warehouse built between 1846 and 1847, now serving as offices with a public house on the ground floor. It was constructed for JP and E Westhead and was rebuilt after a fire in 1850, with a mansard roof added between 1886 and 1917. By 1917, it was occupied by Chorlton Brothers, clothiers.

The building is made of red brick with sandstone dressings and features a slate roof. It has a deep rectangular plan and is designed in a simplified palazzo style. The structure is five storeys tall with an attic and has a symmetrical seven-window facade. Notable architectural features include rusticated quoins, a plain frieze, a modillioned cornice, a brick parapet with stone pilasters and chimneys, and a large attic dormer.

The ground floor has been altered, but it retains a square-headed doorway on the right with an enriched surround. The upper floors have regular fenestration, with all windows of equal height and moulded architraves. The first and second-floor windows are shouldered, while the lower ones have aprons and pediments, with the central one featuring a swan-necked pediment. The upper windows have cornices, except for the central one, which is pedimented, and the third-floor windows are eared, with the central window having a segmental open pediment. The first-floor glazing has been altered, while the upper floors have eight-pane casements. A full-width glazed dormer is located in the slope of the roof, featuring a three-span hipped roof.

The rear and interior of the building were not inspected. It forms a group with No. 47 to the left and Nos 51, 53, 55, 57, and 59 and 61 to the right.
