Description

15 and 17 Piccadilly are office buildings located in Manchester, built in 1881 by Royle and Bennett. They are likely iron-framed and feature a cladding of sandstone ashlar with a slate roof. The buildings have a trapeziform plan on a corner site and exhibit an eclectic architectural style with some Gothic elements.

The structure consists of five storeys and an attic, with three bays facing Piccadilly and four wide bays on Oldham Street, along with a narrow canted corner. The ground floor has been altered, but the upper floors feature chamfered piers, panelled friezes between the first and second floors, and stylised Lombard friezes above the second floor. There is a bracketed cornice over the third floor and ramped parapets above the fourth floor. The steeply-pitched roof includes gable dormers and a square corner oriel that is tiered above the first floor, culminating in a small turret with a slated spirelet.

Each floor has full-width multiple-light windows in each bay, with variations in the number of lights: four, two, and three lights on the front, and four, four, two plus two, and two plus two on the return side to Oldham Street. The windows on the first and fourth floors have square-headed lights, those on the second floor have arched lights, and those on the third floor feature recessed trefoil-headed lights set in arcades of two-centred arches, supported by polished granite shafts with stiff-leaf capitals. All windows are sashed without glazing bars. The buildings have multiple-flue chimney stacks, but the interior has not been inspected.
