Description
No. 1 Piccadilly is a shop built in 1879 by James Lynde, featuring alterations over time. The building is likely framed with cast iron and is clad in wood and stucco, topped with a slate roof. It has an irregular plan on a narrow corner site, with a curved corner that angles back towards Tib Street. The architectural style is eclectic, incorporating elements of the Aesthetic Movement.
The structure stands four storeys tall with an attic, presenting one bay to Piccadilly, a curved corner bay, and a six-bay return to Tib Street that is canted in the center. The ground floor has iron columns and a cornice, although the shop fronts have been altered, with a deep 20th-century fascia board that may hide original features. The upper floors are galleried and divided into bays by short iron columns topped with stiff-leaf caps. Each bay features a four-light canted bay window, with the corner window being curved. Each floor has a panelled frieze and cornice with brackets between the bays. The roof is steeply pitched and includes pedimented two-light dormers, with a tiered pediment over the Piccadilly facade. At the corner, there is an extruded circular turret with a three-light window and a slated spirelet.
