Description
The Plymouth Grove Hotel is a public house built in 1873, featuring red brick with sandstone dressings and a concealed roof. It has a square plan and an unusual canted loggia with a clock-tower on the east side. The building stands three storeys tall with cellars and has three windows across its façade. A prominent balcony on the first floor wraps around the building, supported by coupled columns and featuring a central doorway with altered doors. This doorway is flanked by canted bay windows, all under the balcony. The windows on all floors are segmental-headed, with the ground floor windows having keyed segmental stone lintels, while the second-floor windows are shorter and equipped with balconettes. The cantilevered balcony is adorned with cast-iron railings and extends around the front and loggia. The loggia projects diagonally on the ground floor of the right-hand return wall, consisting of seven bays with a central entrance framed by columns and arcaded round-headed windows on either side. Above this entrance, the tower has a narrow rectangular base and a disproportionately large head, enclosed by slender columns with crocket caps. The head features a prominent two-stage bracketed cornice and a domed roof with pedimented clock faces topped by a small but elaborate cupola.
