Description
The Outpatients Department of the Royal Infirmary, located on Nelson Street in Chorlton-On-Medlock, was built between 1905 and 1908 by architects E.T. Hall and John Brooke. This single-storey, freestanding building is constructed of red brick with Portland stone dressings and bands. The main façade features a pediment with a Doric five-bay loggia, and above it is a thermal window flanked by polychrome banded piers. Arched windows are present on the returns, and a central domed fleche with applied columns sits atop the structure. The parapet is adorned with a Portland stone balustrade. Inside, the hall consists of nine bays that are centrally lit by semi-circular principal trusses. The consultation rooms on either side of the hall have been rebuilt and are not considered to have special architectural or historic interest. The listing also includes the front iron railings and the former lodge.
