Description
This building is a row of shops and offices located at 235 to 291 Deansgate in Manchester, constructed around 1899. It features red brick with sandstone dressings and concealed slate roofs. The long range consists of 29 units, with four and two storeys; the central and end sections are four storeys high. The design has a strong horizontal emphasis, highlighted by continuous cornices at the ground and second floors, along with sandstone sill bands, impost bands, and intermediate bands. This is balanced by vertical pilasters that terminate in tall chimneys or finials. Each bay contains a shop or shops on the ground floor, with four sash windows on each floor above. A notable feature is the central pair of windows on the first floor, which are linked by a single pediment. This building is a striking element of the street and forms a group with the adjacent buildings at Nos 223 to 233, which includes the entrance to the former goods station.
