Description
The Former White Lion Public House is an 1881 building designed by William Mellor. It features a brick exterior, painted at the ground floor, with stone dressings and a tiled roof. The structure has an irregular plan on a corner site, highlighted by a rounded corner tower, and is designed in an eclectic Gothic style.
The building has two storeys and seven bays, along with a four-storey tower. Notable features include a segmental-headed doorway in the third bay, which has shafts and a carved keystone, along with a wrought-iron balcony above it. The ground floor has stilted segmental-headed windows with granite shafts and moulded heads, while the first floor features square-headed windows with segmental tympana. A prominent consoled cornice adorned with moulded terracotta flower motifs and a half-dormer can be found in the third bay.
The four-storey tower includes a wrought-iron balcony on the first floor and a central clock-turret topped with a pyramidal roof. Moulded chimneys are also present. The three-bay corner and three-bay left return wall are designed in a similar style. The interior has not been inspected.
