Description

No. 12 Charlotte Street and No. 17 George Street is a home trade warehouse, now likely used as offices, built around 1870. The building is constructed of sandstone ashlar and has a narrow plan on a corner site, with the rear inner corner interlocking with No. 14 to the left, featuring a loading bay at the rear end of the side. It showcases a simple classical style, comprising a basement and five storeys.

The facade facing Charlotte Street has two bays, while the facade on George Street has eight bays. The basement is rusticated with punch-dressed stone, and the ground floor is channelled with a cornice, broad pilasters, and string-courses on the upper floors, topped with a prominent bracketed cornice that runs around the building. The ground floor features a square-headed doorway to the left with a carved surround and a sashed window to the right, which has a large scrolled keystone. The upper floors contain sashed windows, with the first, second, and third floors having keyed segmental heads, and each top-floor window is adorned with a simple Lombard frieze. The right-hand side wall facing George Street matches the front, except for the rectangular loading bay entrance at the end of the ground floor. The building is part of a group of five similar structures on this side of the street, with Nos. 14 and 16 adjoining on the left.
