Description
The Church of St Michael and All Angels is a Grade II* listed church located on Orton Road in Northenden, Manchester. It was built in 1937 by architect N.F. Cachemaille-Day. The church is constructed of red brick in English bond, featuring some stone dressings with the roof concealed. Its star-shaped plan is created by the diagonal intersection of two unequal squares, along with a wide rectangular narthex at the west end.
The main structure is tall with plain walls and a sill-band running around it, topped by a plain parapet. The upper parts of the cardinal projections feature windows set in tall intersecting Romanesque arcading with Y-tracery, all made of brick, and a central pilaster strip that rises to a moulded cornice. A large plain cross rises from the roof. The single-storey narthex has a flat roof and includes coupled plain rectangular doorways at the center, flanked by three narrow rectangular lancets on each side. Inside, the church has an ingenious plan with lofty columns supporting a flat ribbed roof. The church forms a group with the Rectory attached to its south side.
