Description
The sculptural wall, designed in 1968 by Antony Hollaway in collaboration with Harry M Fairhurst, serves as a sound buffer and is approximately 68 meters long and 4.5 to 6 meters high, showcasing a Brutalist style. It marks the eastern boundary of the Sackville Street campus, with a small car park and the Moffat Building to the west, and a grassy area along London Road to the east. The wall is situated on gently sloping ground, with the highest point at the southern end and a lower ground level at the rear.
The front elevation features prefabricated concrete curtain wall panels of varying heights, which are fitted into concrete columns of different widths. The concrete is shaped using rough sawn timber formwork to enhance its weathered appearance and texture. Most panels include narrow vertical slits at the upper parts, while some panels have large square projections and sunken features. Shorter return walls at each end of the main wall match this style; the north end includes a pair of tall plank and batten timber gates with iron studding that provide access to the small car park behind the wall. The southern end of the wall reaches approximately 7.5 meters in height due to the lower ground level on the south-west side, featuring a series of narrow full-height vertical slits on the left half and full-height vertical channels on the right half. A plain low concrete wall, partially topped with stepped iron railings, extends from the south-east corner of the front elevation along a public footpath but is not of special interest. The rear elevation has a plain and flush finish.
