Description
31-35 Thomas Street is a row of three small townhouses or shops with dwellings and workshops above, now used as shops. They were built in the late 18th century and have been altered. The buildings are constructed of red brick, which is painted white, and feature a slate roof. Each house has a double-depth plan, is single-fronted, and includes back extensions.
They rise three low storeys over cellars and have a three-window range. Each house has a doorway to the left, accessed by three steps. The doorways for Nos. 31 and 35 are round-headed with open-pedimented Tuscan pilaster doorcases, panelled doors, and plain fanlights. The doorway for No. 33 is square-headed with a similar door and a plain overlight. Each house has one large square shop window at the ground floor, topped with a cornice on consoles; the shop window for No. 33 extends over the door. All the ground floor windows now feature 20th-century plate glass.
At the first floor, there is one large segmental-headed window for each house, all fitted with coupled four-pane sashes. At the second floor, Nos. 33 and 35 have low horizontal three-light casements, while No. 31 has two shorter but similar windows, each with eight panes. A large multiple-flue chimney stack is located to the left. The rear and interior of the buildings were not inspected. This row represents a rare survival of domestic buildings from this period in the city centre, and if they were originally shops, they are considered unique.
