Description

75 and 77 High Street is a building likely used as a wholesale garment warehouse, constructed around 1860 to 1870. It features an iron frame with a cladding of sandstone ashlar and red brick, along with polished granite and red and yellow sandstone dressings. The roof is concealed. The building has a trapeziform plan and is designed in the Venetian Gothic style, standing four storeys tall with three and a half bays, including a half-bay on the left and a rounded corner on the right.

The ground floor showcases panelled-pilaster piers with large moulded brackets supporting a dentilled cornice. The first floor mirrors this with similar piers and cornice, while the second floor has short stone piers and the third floor features sill and impost bands. A prominent bracketed eaves cornice caps the structure. The ground floor includes a round-headed doorway on the left with pilaster jambs and elaborate decoration above, and another similar doorway at the right-hand corner, which has polished granite shafts with heavily foliated caps. There are 20th-century shop windows in the three main bays.

On the first floor, the stone façade has arcaded fenestration featuring four round-headed sashed windows in each full bay and two to the left, with slender shafts and foliated caps between the lights, as well as spherical roundels in the spandrels. The second and third floors have arcaded three-light sashes, with the second floor featuring round-headed lights and polished shafts with foliated caps, while the third floor has segmental-headed sashes with linked segmental hoodmoulds. The right-hand side of the building faces Thomas Street and consists of two bays designed in a matching style. The interior has not been inspected.
