Description

Massey Chambers is a building of group value, constructed in 1872 and designed by Edward Salomons. It is located on Booth Street in Manchester, with a rear elevation facing Kennedy Street. The building, now offices, is built of sandstone ashlar with a slate roof. It has a rectangular plan and is constructed in a Renaissance style.

The building has a basement, three storeys, and an attic. The front elevation has five bays and is symmetrical. The ground floor has recessed sash windows, above which are floating sunk panels with carving set within triangular mouldings. The first floor features emphatically enriched round-headed windows under a prominent enriched cornice, intended to suggest a giant arcade. These windows have stylised rectangular shafts at the jambs, enriched impost bands and carved spandrels containing masks in roundels. The central first-floor window has two round-headed lights with a foliated shaft and circular tracery in the head. The second floor has recessed sash windows (two lights in the centre) with jambs similar to those on the first floor. A panelled frieze and bracketed cornice sit above the second floor, topped by a parapet with a large, pedimented dormer in the centre. The doorway has an elaborate architrave including pilasters of polished pink granite, a lintel bearing the inscription "MASSEY CHAMBERS" in raised lettering, a prominent cornice and carved pedimented entablature. The parapet features a raised round-headed panel over each bay, each containing a carved figurehead. The central dormer window has two round-headed lights framed by a pilastered architrave and carved pediment, with reclining cherub supporters.

The rear elevation, facing 7 Kennedy Street, is three bays wide and in a simpler style. The interior was not inspected during the listing process.
