Description

The Former Manchester and Salford Trustee Savings Bank, located at 8 and 10 Booth Street in Manchester, was built in 1872 by Edward Salomons. This three-storey building features a sandstone ashlar exterior and a slate roof, designed in a Renaissance style. It has a rectangular plan that extends to the rear towards Kennedy Street. The façade is symmetrical with five bays, a plinth, decorative bands, and a prominent bracketed cornice. The mansard roof is topped with gable chimneys.

On the ground floor, the building is treated as a banded rustic, featuring a central doorway with a pilastered architrave and a segmental pediment adorned with elaborate carving. The segmental-headed windows have rusticated voussoirs, with the leftmost window altered to serve as a doorway. The first floor showcases an arcade of large round-headed arched windows, complete with linking impost bands and enriched surrounds that include mask keystones and hollow spandrels. Each window contains two round-headed lights supported by a shaft, carved capital, and carved tympanum. The second floor has smaller segmental-headed windows with enriched stilted architraves, while the attic features gableted dormers with acroteria. The rear façade at 11 Kennedy Street is similar in style but simpler. The interior has not been inspected.
