Description
Saint Paul's Church was built between 1838 and 1842 by John Harper of York, on land donated by the 13th Earl of Derby, with contributions from O O Walker and Thomas Openshaw. The church is designed in a 13th-century style and constructed from finely-cut honey and grey sandstone in wide courses. It has a nearly rectangular plan, with a slightly protruding west tower and a chancel that is the same height as the nave. The leanto aisles and clerestory feature paired lancet windows. The west front includes a gabled doorway situated between buttresses, with a single lancet window in the leanto wings. The upper stages of the tower are adorned with tall paired lancets on each face and topped with spiky pinnacles. Inside, the church has a flat ceiling above tall, slender arcades.
