Description
The Scholefield grave slab, located in the churchyard of the Church of St Mary, is a rectangular slab made of sandstone. It features incised carvings, including a border, with a triangle motif at the center of the head and scroll and diamond motifs at the foot. The main inscription, in widely spaced lettering, reads: "HERE RESTETH THE BO/DIES OF JAMES SCHOLE/FIELD OF PRESTWICH WHO/DYED APRIL THE 11 1670/AND OF THOMAS/SCHOLES WHO DYED MARCH/THE 14 1672." Below this, there is a later inscription, added after the grave was reused, which states: "Alfo Thomas Crompton/of Pilkington Buried/June 17th 1717 Aged 87/Alfo Thomas Crompton/of Clifton who departed/this Life June 9th 1789 aged/70 Years."
