Description
The boundary wall at Wesleyan Day and Sunday School, located on Wesley Street in Tottington, was built in 1868 and modified around 1905. It features gate piers, a boundary wall, and end piers, all linked to a pedestrian gateway, railings, and a date stone from the original chapel, which is adjacent to the churchyard of the Methodist church to the east. The overall length of the wall is approximately 25 meters.
The piers are made of monolithic gritstone and stand about 2 meters high, with a square section, moulded copings, and plain capstones. The wall itself is constructed from stone slabs and coursed gritstone, with wrought iron railings and a pedestrian gate on the east side. This section of the boundary wall has a stone coping and features a narrow pedestrian gate leading to the churchyard, complete with ashlar quoins and dog bars topped with trefoil finials. The wall steps down to provide a view of the church and includes a railing with closely set bars and a dog rail.
Set into the wall at ground level and facing east is a limestone date stone, framed in a moulded surround, inscribed with "WESLEYAN METHODIST CHAPEL 1829." The original chapel, which faced the main road with its gable entrance, was located to the east of the school and was demolished in 1905.
