Description

Outwood Viaduct is a former railway bridge that spans the River Irwell, built in 1881 for the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway by Andrew Handyside and Co of Derby. The structure features five cast-iron arches supported by tall brick pillars, which are topped with stone. It has brick abutments and stone bases with cutwaters on two pillars located in the river bed. The six ribs of the arches are arranged to support the railway tracks directly, and the bridge has wooden decking. This viaduct is noted as an unusually late example of a cast iron railway bridge.
