Description
Lumb Brook Bridge is an aqueduct that carries the Bridgewater Canal over Lumb Brook Road and Lumb Brook, built in 1770 by James Brindley, as indicated by the date on the springer. The structure features squared snecked blocks of red and yellow sandstone, with red brick lining around the deep segmental archway. The abutments are slightly concave and broadly canted with a battered design. A ramped path leads from the road to the towpath, flanked by sandstone retaining walls and a simple post-and-rail fence. The aqueduct is topped with a curved brick parapet that has six rectangular recessed panels on the outer side, finished with 20th-century concrete coping. Additionally, a semi-circular arched sandstone culvert runs diagonally beneath the road, allowing Lumb Brook to pass through the aqueduct. The northern section of the aqueduct is located in Lumb Brook Road, within Stockton Heath Parish, while the south-western part is situated in Lumb Brook Road, Appleton Civil Parish.
