Description
The Halfacre Lane Aqueduct, built around 1770 by James Brindley, is an aqueduct located over the Bridgewater Canal in Grappenhall. Constructed of red sandstone and red-brown brick, it features a segmental arch primarily made of brick that curves downward towards the center. Each end of the archway shows a small section that indicates a slightly later extension. The side walls beneath the arch have a curved batter and a plinth in the central portion. The stone abutments are also curved and battered, featuring keystones and plain stone bands that back the brick voussoirs. On the south side, there is a plain stone cap, while the corresponding band on the north side supports a plain brick parapet for the towpath.
