Description
This section of the city walls in Chester, extending approximately 50 meters east from Bridgegate to the drum tower, dates from the late 11th century to the early 12th century. It was converted into a raised promenade between 1702 and 1708 and has undergone repairs and alterations at various times, including modifications made by Joseph Turner in 1782 near Bridgegate and Lower Bridge Street. The walls are constructed from coursed red sandstone rubble. The ground level inside the wall is roughly at the same height as the wall walk, sloping down toward Lower Bridge Street to the east, while there is a drop of up to 7 meters on the outer side.
